Computer Down

Posted by Victoria Strauss for Writer Beware

Today I thought I'd be writing a blog post and catching up on Writer Beware correspondence. However, that is not to be.

On Friday, my desktop computer (on which I keep most of my Writer Beware files) was working fine. Turned it on this morning...and it won't start. So it's off to the computer repair shop.

I do have Internet access via my laptop, so if you've written to me in the past week and I haven't responded (I am, as always, several days behind on correspondence), please contact me again, either via my website (if you want to reach me at my personal email address) or at beware [at] sfwa.org (for Writer Beware).

Thanks, and hopefully I'll be fully operational soon.

Beauty and the Beast: A Coloring Book from Silver Dolphin Books [Review & Giveaway]

My thoughts: There has been a lot of press recently about fairy tales and specifically about "Beauty and the Beast." A recently released film has drawn interest and piqued hearts young and old with its tale of love overcoming ugliness. There are books on Beauty and the Beast that facilitate enjoyment on various levels. And today we're looking at a beautifully drawn coloring book from Silver Dolphin Books that has quotes from the original story. This is a quality product that older children, teens, and adults will enjoy coloring with highly detailed drawings that will fascinate and draw out the creative spark in the most avid "colorers." The designs are quite intricate and very pretty reminiscent of Walter Crane's art. Coloration will require very fine points and care to be done well. About the book: This enchanting coloring book is full of wonderful pictures, patterns, and borders to be colored in, as budding artists immerse themselves in the story of Beaut...

Would You Like to Know? Collection By Tim Dowley and Graham Jefferson

ISBN 9781781283271 $12.99 | Paperback | Candle Books My thoughts: Superb text. Great pictures. Wonderful collection that introduces the young child to the concepts of God, Jesus, the Bible, Prayer, and the two main events of the Bible - Christ's Birth and the Story of the Death, Burial, and Resurrection of the Savior. Each little book is complete in itself and literally asks the child "Would you like to know...." and then beautifully tells the child about the main subject of that particular book. I like that you can build with each book on the concept of God, His Word, and His plan of Salvation. The child is frequently encouraged to pray and deep respect for God is inherent in the books. A great addition to the book collections of young children. I highly recommend. About the book: In this new addition to the fantastic Would You Like to Know? series, six little books are featured in one boxed gift set. Each book offers a starting point for young children to explore some o...

Arbordale publishes delightful educational books for children - 3-book review & giveaway

Hình ảnh
I continue to be amazed at the publications from Arbordale Publishing and the fun, educational material presented so well. Young readers can enjoy a bit of a story right along with a good dose of important information designed to stretch their intellectual abilities and develop their critical thinking skills. Written and illustrated by skilled professionals who write and draw in the fields about which they themselves are proficient and qualified, the stories are engaging and sometimes just downright funny. Sometimes the author and illustrator (either a photographer or an artist that draws and paints) presents basic facts and tells them in an interesting manner. Sometimes, they weave a tale that is fanciful and fun but still packed with facts about the particular subject the book is designed to impart to the young reader. Other great opportunities presented by Arbordale in relation to their books is the online material for each of the titles expanding further the information already in ...
